Official video of Big Country performing their Top-40 hit "In A Big Country" from the 1983 album The Crossing. Crank it up!
"In a Big Country" was released in May 1983 as the third single from their debut album The Crossing and peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching No. 17 on the UK Singles Chart and number 3 in Canada. The album reached #3 in the UK and #4 in Canada where it went platinum. It peaked at #18 in the US on the Billboard 200.
The music video for the song received heavy airplay on MTV and later on VH1. It follows the four band members as they track down an unspecified treasure, while constantly being pursued and bested by a woman who appears to be a rival treasure-hunter. Interspersed throughout the video, in between the action, the band is shown in flannel shirts and blazers performing the song onstage. The video has plenty of action and beautiful scenery of the English countryside including Swanage Bay. (My apologies for "tilting" the video - HD video/HQ audio)
Big Country were formed in Scotland in 1981 by Stuart Adamson (formerly of Skids, vocals/guitar/keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar/mandolin/sitar/vocals), Tony Butler (bass guitar/vocals) and Mark Brzezicki (drums/percussion/vocals). The were most known for their ability to make their guitars sound like bagpipes, which is a stand-out feature of the song. They were frequently compared to their UK contemporaries U2, Simple Minds, and The Alarm. In fact Mike Peters of The Alarm joined the band in 2010 to play several concerts. Sadly Stuart Adamson passed away in 2001 from an apparent suicide but leaves behind an inspiring musical legacy.

Ha!
I've never seen you look like this without a reason
Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you
Shock!
I never took the smile away from anybody's face
And that's a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered
I'm not expecting to grow flowers in a desert
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive
So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you
Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded
Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming
Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered
Shout! 1, 2!
I'm not expecting to grow flowers in a desert
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive
In a big country, dreams stay with you
Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive
Ha!
